Before the Crowds: A Family Road Trip from Sweden to the Dolomites in Early Spring
24 march 2026
Easter weekend is approaching and we are hitting the road in a couple of days. From March 27th to April 7th, our Swedish-Danish family of four — plus one very energetic Golden Doodle dog Carlo — will be driving south from Malmö through Germany, into France and all the way to the Dolomites in northern Italy.
When we originally booked, we had reserved the Van Villa but now we have upgraded to the Camper Castle — one of Roadsurfer's largest mobile home. For a 13-day Easter trip with a family and a dog, that kind of space can be neccesary.
The route takes us south through Germany with a stop in Colmar, one of Europe's most beautifully preserved medieval towns, before we arrive at Port Grimaud and Saint-Maxime on the French Riviera. A few days in the south of France, then east into Italy and up into the Dolomites — the dramatic mountain range in northern Italy that somehow looks even more extraordinary in early spring, with snow still on the peaks and the summer crowds nowhere in sight. I have been in Italy many times during the last 30 years, from the north to the south, and its always fascinating to see all the different aspects that Italy has to offer.
I'll be bringing my cameras as always. This time the Nikon Z8 with a 24-70 mm 2.8 and 70-200mm 2.8 together with the Nikon ZR with a 20mm 1.8 for some cinematic videos. As a photographer and filmmaker, this trip is also a creative project — a chance to document some of Europe's most compelling landscapes before the season fully opens. I'll be sharing images, short videos and stories from the road here as we go.
